Looking forward to celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012, the Barbican Piano Trio is regarded as one of the UK's leading ensembles with a reputation for stimulating performances, breadth of repertoire and exceptional audience rapport.

The Trio has performed across four continents, visiting the USA five times and making its debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1994. It was invited to perform in the Phillips Collection's 25th Anniversary "Celebrity Artist" Series in Washington DC and the Prado's 175th Anniversary celebrations in Madrid. especially successful.

Although the trio's repertoire comprises over seventy major works, they also enjoy exploring less familiar pieces. As part of their commitment to education work, they hold regular masterclasses and present informative concerts for children and students of all ages. The trio is a resident ensemble at Royal Holloway, University of London.

The Barbican Piano Trio celebrated the beginning of its third decade with a three concert series featuring music by Haydn, Beethoven and Taneyev at Wigmore Hall and by revisiting many of the places at which it had performed during its first twenty years.

Ensembles of the
Varaždin School of Music

 

Varaždin School of Music is one of the oldest institutions for music education in Croatia, with the tradition reaching back to the year 1828. Today it is situated in the Erdödy Palace built in 1762 and has about 700 pupils, not only from the city of Varaždin, but also from the whole northwest Croatia.

Beginning in the early childhood, the pupils can choose among all the classical and some Croatian folk instruments, voice classes, various ensembles, chamber groups, orchestras and choirs, as well as various disciplines of music theory and composition. It consists of primary and secondary school, the latter offering also tuition in academic subjects and thoroughly preparing the pupils for professional studies.

Since the mid 20th century the School has been especially renowned for its choirs. The story began with the Children Choir and its famous conductor prof. Marijan Zuber. 1974 the  Girls Choir of the secondary school has been founded by Prof. Vladimir Ščedrov and soon it became one of the most successful Croatian school choirs, winning the highest prices at state competitions and travelling for concert tours in Austria and Hungary.

Since 1997 Prof. Dada Ruža has been appointed choirmaster, the choir kept its leading position in Croatia and continued its activities on the international level, wining first prizes at international competitions in Slovenia and Italy and giving concerts in Germany, Austria and Spain.

The repertoire of the choir includes a capella music as well as scores with instruments or orchestra, that the choir has performend both with youth and professional orchestras from Croatia, Germany and UK. Croatian musical heritage has always been an especially important part of the repertoire, including music from early centuries up to contemporary music. The Mixed choir has grown during the last decade, rooted in the same artistic and educational principles, that has been recognized by the Ivan Lukačić Prize of the Varaždin Baroque Evenings, as well as by invitations to concerts in Croatia, Germany and Austria.

Vocal ensemble Collegium floridum is the newest chamber group at the School. Its singers have been chosen among the best members of the choirs and the voice classes. The group has performed at several international events of the City of Varaždin and at this moment it is preparing to take part at the state competition in chamber music.

The Harris Quartet

Formed by Undergraduates at the University of Cambridge in 2004, the Harris Quartet is fast becoming recognised as an ensemble of rare distinction. Their playing has been described as “genuinely enthralling” by concertedeffort.org and “an experience not to be missed” by Varsity magazine. As a Quartet, they have studied and participated in masterclasses with the Endellion, Dante, Maggini and Medici Quartets, and all the members have since gone on to pursue careers as professional musicians at the highest level. They perform extensively throughout the UK, as well as regular recitals in partnership with Michaelhouse Centre and the University of Cambridge. The Quartet has a recording partnership with composer Adrian Brockless, and has recorded and premiered many of his works.
